As part of DDI’s land reclamation project in Sierra Leone, the community of Wardu, located in the Kono District in Sierra Leone, reclaimed a pond leftover by artisanal mining of diamonds to reuse it as agriculture land.
In addition to negative environmental impacts, the pond posed serious health and safety risks. In 2018, a girl drowned in the pond. With the Wordu primary school located less than a 100 meters away from the pond, the community resolved to undertake the reclamation work.
On May 18 and 19, 2019, a team of DDI representatives joined local and national government officials for a ceremony to officially hand-over the reclaimed land to the community for cultivation. Residents of Wardu also turned up to celebrate the successful completion of the reclamation project.
